The music couldn't quell the restlessness filling his chest. Forty-eight hours had passed since Ponce Sanz was officially reported missing, a few more since he was last seen alive. His visit to the mansion had left him dumbstruck. Nothing but doubts, he thought, feeling like he was in a maze of lies with no way out.
He couldn't even figure out who he was working for at that moment. Berlanga had asked for his help, though that was water under the bridge now. He had gotten in over his head when that flight attendant sought his services and his scarf turned up stained in the Manzanares. That was when he lost control. With Robles' proposition, everything became murkier. And now, without protection or a clue to guide him, he questioned whether he was heading for a point of no return.
He left the highway and joined the city's beltway. Once again, the quiet was replaced by hustle and bustle, and the roar of engines multiplied by the second. Through the rearview mirror, he spotted a black German sedan speeding towards him. He didn't think much of it. He knew the kind some people were on the road, especially when time was of the essence.
Maldonado switched lanes, moving to the right to let it pass, but was surprised when it didn't. Instead, the vehicle slowed down and matched his lane, maintaining a distance. The fatigue and headache were brewing an absurd paranoia in him.
"You're going to end up jaded like Berlanga," he thought.
As he approached a roundabout, he spotted the large signs above the sprawling office complexes. There, he recognized the name of the well-known audiovisual producer Salvaje, which occupied much of the land bordering the highway. He was well aware of how these concrete cages worked: without a pass and an appointment, the mission was nearly impossible. Fortunately, he had an appointment.
He took the exit that led him directly to the studio's parking lot. Through the side mirror, he saw the sedan continuing in another direction.
"You're losing your mind, Javier," he thought, sighing as he slowed down and neared the enormous building.
He parked in a vacant lot nearby and watched the personnel going in and out of the compound. It was his first time there, though he had driven past it hundreds of times. Most of the employees were under thirty and dressed casually. The informal atmosphere was a facade, as widespread rumors about those environments claimed working there was a hell of orders and eccentricities.
"But this is television," he mused.
He walked through the revolving door into the main lobby. His presence did not go unnoticed, drawing attention from the security guards stationed at the entrance of the fortress. The eyes of a receptionist fixed on his face, and he understood that his options were limited.
"Good morning," he said as he approached her, leaning on the white wooden desk. "My name isâ¦"
"Do you have an appointment with someone?" she asked, cutting off his introduction.
"I'm here to see someone."
She shook her head, and he didn't like that.
